Inaugurated by Caracalla in 216 CE, they extended for 10 hectares, vaunted a sophisticated water system for its tepidarium, calidarium, frigidarium and two gymnasiums, and included a Mithraeum, a temple dedicated to Mithras, the god venerated by young soldiers who would undergo bloody, Eastern-style initiation rituals. Priceless materials stripped from the structure were recycled to build Santa Maria in Trastevere.
