Stadio Domiziano

This is where public games and sporting events organized by Domitian were held in the 1st century. It was a large stadium with 30,000 seats, as large as Piazza Navona, which was built atop it after being used as a quarry in the Middle Ages. Today, it is possible to visit large portions of the site. Many of the buildings in the piazza contain cellars built directly into the original structure.
