Named the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument at its inauguration, it is also known as the Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) and was built to commemorate Italian liberation. Built between 1885 and 1935 like a modern Roman Forum, it houses the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
