Cimitero Monumentale Del Verano

  • Piazzale del Verano, 1

It is the largest and most important cemetery in the city and Italy as whole. Beginning in 1805, when Napoleon decreed that burials take place outside the city centre, all Romans except for popes, monarchs and cardinals were buried here. Full of chapels in a variety of styles and finely decorated, the cemetery is a veritable citadel. Political figures and entertainers who lived in Rome are amongst those buried in the cemetery.
