The church, one of the four papal basilicas, is perhaps the only one that still maintains its original early-Christian structure and was built in the 4th century on the spot where snow is said to have fallen in the summer (commemorated every August 5). Below ground, there is an Augustus-era building. The mosaics decorating the three-nave interior are amongst the first seen in Rome. nside also to the oldest Nativity, by Arnolfo di Cambio.
