Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere

  • Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere

It is the oldest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and one of the oldest in Rome, dating to the early 3rd century. It is said that the church was built where oil miraculously erupted from the ground. Rebuilt in the 12th century with materials taken from the Baths of Caracalla, it conserves a triumph of 13th-century mosaics, many of which are by Pietro Cavallini, as well as the historic and priceless Madonna Theotókos.
