Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura

This was the cemetery where St. Paul was buried. The church, built by Constantine, is one of the four papal basilicas, the second largest after St. Peter’s and also called Ostiense. Vaunting an imposing colonnade, it was destroyed by a fire in 1823 and later rebuilt exactly as it was. The ciborium by Arnolfo di Cambio is priceless, while the mosaic portraits of all the popes is a rare masterpiece.
